The neglected function of B lymphocytes, prevent and treat premature birth

In the United States and many other countries, Preterm birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy, may happen on one in every six pregnant women. It is the leading cause of infant mortality and long-term disease. It also cause heavy social and economic burden. Although preterm birth is a complicated situation, it is a very common triggers for the mother during pregnancy may get infection and subsequent inflammation.

Chief biomedical researcher recently published a study in the journal "nature medicine", led by wei school of medicine, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology research team found a type of key functions - B lymphocyte immune cells, caused bythe mother of resistance during inflammation which may cause premature birth.
According to Chen, B lymphocytes can produce antibodies to protect the body against infection, but scientists and clinicians have argued that these cells are rare in endometrium or evenno existence, and it’s not very important for the pregnancy.
Chens lab found that in late period of pregnancy, the mother of B lymphocyte not only exists in the endometrium of mice and humans, but also detect inflammation and uterine pressure, this is the main cause of premature birth. In turn, it also produce molecules including one called PIBF1, to inhibit uterine inflammation, and premature birth.
Chen said: "this study not only reveals the B lymphocyte is neglected for the function to promote a healthy pregnancy in a long time, but also support the use of B lymphocyte derived molecules (such as PIBF1) to prevent or treat premature".
Chens team already has carried on the proof of concept and efficacy researchin animal models, and with the help of technology commercialization office Wayne state university, submitted a patent for this potential therapies.
Maybe they will get more amazing news in this research field in the future.
